Children of the Sea Film's Theatrical Screening Cancelled!


GKIDS recently announced the cancellation of the theatrical screening of its upcoming anime film 'Children of the Sea' via its twitter handle. The film was supposed to release in August through Fathom Events, after previous delays due to Coronavirus pandemic. GKIDS stated that "The safety of our fans remains our top priority, and we hope to bring Ayumu Watanabe’s stunning film to the big screen in the future". Another Tweet from GKIDS also revealed that even though, the screening of the film is cancelled, the film will be available on Blu-ray, DVD & Digital on September 1.


Children of the Sea (Kaijū no Kodomo) is based on Daisuke Igarashi's popular manga of the same name. The film is directed by Ayumu Watanabe and produced by Eiko Tanaka. The screenplay is written by the original mangaka Daisuke Igarashi himself.


The theatrical release of the film was originally planned on April 24. The film was also scheduled to screen in Canada on April 22-23. Children of the Sea opened in Japan in June 2019.

Synopsis:

When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad worked. Now she feels drawn toward the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there, Umi and Sora, who were raised by dugongs and hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does. As the kids get caught up in the mystery behind the sudden worldwide disappearance of the ocean's fish, they uncover cosmic connections that will change them forever.
