The official Gundam.info website announced on Tuesday that the life-size, moving Gundam statue, with a height of 18-meter high (59-foot tall), will hold its grand opening for the public on December 19, 2020. The Gundam Factory attraction will open for a limited time until March 31, 2021.
Gundam Factory Yokohama is collaborating with Yokohama City as part of the Mobile Suit Gundam's 40th Anniversary.
The statue weighs 25 tons and features movement in 24 places (excluding the hands). The statue executes a new demonstration of its capabilities every half hour from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and the staff plans to run special seasonal shows from time to time.
The entrance ticket for the area will cost 1,650 yen (about US$16) for adults and 1,100 yen (about UD$10) for children between 7 and 12. A ticket for going up to the Gundam-Dock Tower observation deck will cost 3,300 yen (about US$30). Up to three children under the age of 6 can accompany a paying adult for free.
To commemorate the grand opening, exclusive Gunpla "1/200 RX-78F00 Gundam" will be presented to the visitors.
The challenge to create a moving Gundam first got underway in 2014 as part of the Gundam Global Challenge. The project previously had a competition in 2015 to make an 18-meter-tall (59-foot-tall) statue move.
The tickets can be purchased from the App Store and Google Play too, starting from October 1, 2020.
Gundam Factory Yokohama has two decks, "GUNDAM-DOCK" that stores "moving Gundam" and performs maintenance work and "GUNDAM-LAB" that contains exhibition facilities where the visitors can enjoy learning about the mechanism of "moving Gundam."
The Gundam project is described as:
The life-sized GUNDAM statue that appeared in 2009. The sight of the statue with its feet planted firmly on the ground captured the hearts of many people and represented the possibility of dreams coming true. And now, GUNDAM, which marks its 40th anniversary in 2019, will move Japan, and move the world. “Challenge the dream. GUNDAM will move. The world will move.” Challenge the ultimate dream of moving an 18m tall life-sized GUNDAM! To realize this grand dream, we have formed a project team, collecting a wide range of ideas and plans from all over the world, promoting a global project with Japan as the axis. By embracing open innovation, we have put together various opinions, wisdom and technologies into a single plan. From basic design to detailed design, repeated verification experiments, and finally to production… In 2020, the dream will become reality. The internationally-acclaimed power of creation, along with the strong passion of people across fields and generations, will make GUNDAM move. The unprecedented, greatest ever entertainment in history will be realized in the form of GUNDAM.
